Tracey Crouch MP visits us as her first constituency school visit of 2021

Tracey Crouch, MP for Chatham & Aylesford, recently joined Cormac Murphy, our Headteacher, and Mandy Gage, Director of Education for Chatham, to take a tour of our school on her first visit since lockdown.

During the visit, Tracey Crouch was keen to learn more about how our school develops children’s learning and took the opportunity to watch some lessons in action.

We discussed the impact of Covid-19 on schools during the months that have passed by and how we are looking forward to a ‘normal’ way of school life again.

Tracey Crouch took part in a questions and answers session with our Year 6 children, with excellent questions being asked including “How do you represent your constituents in Parliament?”, “What are your responsibilities as an MP?” and “Why aren’t there more opportunities for children to influence the decisions made for their communities?”.

The children were confident with their questioning and we thank Tracey Crouch for her time.

Mr Murphy said: “We are delighted to welcome Tracey Crouch back to New Horizons Children’s Academy.  As part of our Thinking Inclusively Curriculum this term, the children are developing their understanding of democracy, so the opportunity to question our local elected representative gave our Year 6 children a real insight into life as an MP and how we can make our voices heard. The children were inspired by the visit, and I think we might even have a few future politicians in our school.”

Tracey Crouch said: “It was a pleasure to visit New Horizon’s Children’s Academy recently, my first constituency school visit of 2021. I enjoyed the enthusiasm shown by the Year 6 pupils in their questions to me and was impressed with the work that Mr Murphy and his team have done to keep pupils and staff safe. I look forward to visiting the school again soon and wish the Year 6 pupils all the best, as they prepare for the move to Secondary School over the coming months.”
